Chopta is located in “Kedarnath wild Life Sanctuary” also known as “Kedarnath Musk Deer Sanctuary” of Rudraprayag district, Uttarakhand. Kedarnath Sanctuary is the largest protected sanctuary in the western Himalayas. Primary concern of this sanctuary is to protect the “Himalayan Musk Deer”. Being situated in Kedarnath wildlife scantuary at an elevation of 2,680 metres above to sea level, Chopta valley is blessed with the magnificent natural beauty of deep Pine, Deodar forest and rich variety of flora & fauna included rare species of birds and Himalayan Musk Deer. Because of its lush green meadows and snow capped mountains this place is also called Mini Switzerland of India. If you want to be the witness of rich diversity of flora and fauna in Chopta valley, then you must visit here from April to June or September to November. Chopta is a real heaven for nature and wildlife lovers, which attracts large number of tourists from all over the country.

Flora

Birch, Pine, Rhododendrons, alpine meadows and the several beautiful Himalayan flower plants. In the middle altitude it covers with temperate forests and high altitude dotted with sun alpine and alpine coniferous forests. As the altitude increases, the alpine grassland and high Bugyals covers the region.

Fauna

Being located at the Kedarnath wildlife sanctuary and dense forest surrounded Chopta is home of all Himalayan mammals, birds and reptiles. There are more than 121 species of Mammals and 251 species of birds.
